Men’s Health/ Not Cool/ Libido

Men's Health:
Did you know that on average, men are less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than women? In 1920 the life expectancy gender gap was only one year.  Today that difference is more than five years.

There's a reason Men's Health Week is observed each year in the week leading up to Father's Day, and it’s not just to remind men to get their annual physical.  As co-creator and former Congressman Bill  Richardson observed in 1994 when introducing the bill to Congress:

"Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue.
Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue."

According to the Men's Health Network, a national non-profit organization with a mission to reach men, boys and their families with health prevention tools, programs, and advocacy, men on average:

•Die younger -and in greater numbers-  of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and many other diseases
•Don’t take care of themselves as well as women do
•Are more likely to engage in unhealthy behavior
•Don’t seek medical attention when they need it
•Are less likely than women to adopt preventative health measures
•Are less likely to have health insurance
•Are more likely to work in dangerous occupations

By bringing awareness to the scope of the issue, the Men’s Health Network aims to make noise about a predominantly silent crisis in the health and well-being of men.  And while the statistics are startling, they offer some practical advice on how men and their families can help close the gap.

•Eat a varied diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat foods
•Be especially careful to limit cholesterol intake and avoid saturated fats
•Moderate exercise for 30 minutes five times a week, or vigorous exercise for 20 minutes three times a week
•Protect yourself from the sun

•Maintain a healthy weight
•Drink at least three 8-ounce glasses of water per day
•Limit alcohol
•Don’t smoke, and minimize your exposure to second-hand smoke
•Replace your dinners with green juices (veggies).
•See your knowledgeable doctor regularly
•Know your family history and discuss it with your doctor
•Visit Ayurveda ashrams once a while to learn all about healthy habits, food, and yoga.
•If you are over 40, get a baseline PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test and monitor this periodically with your doctor
•Manage your stress.
•Get help if you need it

Five Manly Skills Every Self-Respecting Man Should Have:
A self-respecting man is one who can look at himself in the mirror and say, "I like what I see. I'm proud of who I am. I don’t need drugs, alcohol or violence to solve life's challenges. Whatever doesn't overcome or oppress me only makes me stronger. I don't have to earn a million dollars a year, and I don’t have to be the most popular person on the block. Reality check: Successful women choose their words wisely because they know words have power. Here, six statements you'll never ever hear them say:

"I don't know how!"
The bottom line is that the brightest women are the most resourceful. They might not know how to do something, especially if it is something new, but they figure it out. "I don't have time."
